New Comics Day!

Today marks the end of Blackest Night, so it's a pretty exciting new comics day for me. I feel like I wound up falling behind in almost every comic I read because of it, but it was worth it. I've actually already read Blackest Night #8, but here's everything else I'll be reading this week.

Detective Comics #863
Jack Of Fables #44
Teen Titans  #81
Justice League Of America #43 (I haven't read a JLA comic in quite some time, but I wanted to check out the new lineup)
Justice Society Of America #37
Adventure Comics #9
Gotham City Sirens #10
Blackest Night #8
X-Force  #25

CAVEMAN BATMAN

Over at the official DC Universe blog, there are some images from the upcoming Return of Bruce Wayne, and they're pretty exciting stuff.

Looking at these makes me think of the goofy fantasies I had about Bruce making a dinosaur into his Batmobile when they first showed him in the cave with anthro, and seeing how close they may be to coming true makes me want to jump up and down.

I know that there are some people who are skeptical about time-traveling Batman being canon (that's not my Batman), but man, comics are supposed to be fun, and I can't think of many things more fun than Caveman Batman, Cowboy Batman, or especially Noir Private Investigator Batman.

I have really been enjoying Dick as Batman, and I wish we had a little longer to see him trying to find his footing in the position, but at the same time, I can't wait for this. I can't wait to see Tim finally be proven right, I can't wait to see the way Bruce reacts to everything that's happened while he was gone, and I especially can't wait to see what he's been up to for all this time. For a good while now, I have felt so excited for things to come in comics, from Blackest Night and the Batman Reborn titles, and now there's this and Brightest Day, and the Heroic Age over at Marvel. It is a good time for comics. I'm happy to be a fan.

The Unwritten is a Good Comic

the unwritten comic
So, around a year or so ago, a friend and I were looking around at our local comic shop, and the first issue of The Unwritten happened to catch my eye. It had a cool cover and an endorsement from BKV, and both my friend and I made a note to check it out sometime. Unfortunately, I have a pretty terrible memory when it comes to this stuff, so I promptly forgot the name of the comic and only my friend did the checking out. He told me it was okay, and then with Batman Reborn and Blackest Night stuff going on I forgot all about it until maybe two weeks ago when I was reminded of the name of the comic.

the unwritten
So I grabbed the first issue and I read it and I immediately loved it. The storybook stuff that the story started with was beautiful drawn and executed, and the rest of the story was fantastic. I felt like so much happened in just that one issue and I couldn't wait to read the rest of the comic. I remembered my friend saying it was okay (I have no problem remembering stuff like this for some reason), so I called him up, deciding that he must have read the wrong comic.

Friend: Hello?
Me: Have you ever read The Unwritten?
Friend: Oh. Yeah, it was okay.
Me: But it was awesome!
Friend: It was okay.
Me: adventure time finn

So my friend is totally wrong. I got all caught up on The Unwritten and it is awesome and I can't wait to see where the story goes from here. Without spoiling too much, the comic is about the son of the author of wildly popular Harry Potter/Narnia-ish books who mysteriously disappeared years ago. Said son was the inspiration for the book's main character and basically coasts through life on the popularity of the books until he is asked a question that starts to tear his world apart. I'm not making it sound awesome enough. IT IS GREAT I PROMISE. The first trade is out already and there are 11 issues out in floppy form. Read it and agree with me about how wrong my friend is.

Superheroes and Villians as Mr. Men

Check out this great post over at Bite that features a wide variety of comic characters drawn in the style of the Mr. Men books. The pictures are the work of artist Seven Hundred, and feature a huge selection of Marvel and DC characters (plus a few from Kick-ass). I especially like the Watchmen set.

It's New Comics Day!

power girl
It's not a bad week for me. I'm always excited for Power Girl and from what I can tell the newest issue of Green Lantern has some pretty huge stuff in it. Here's the full list of what I'll be grabbing this week:

BATMAN: STREETS OF GOTHAM #10
GREEN LANTERN #52
JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA #37
POWER GIRL #10
SUPERMAN #698
SUPERMAN/BATMAN #70
AIR #19
CAPTAIN AMERICA #604
UNCANNY X-MEN #522 (I don't normally read this, but Kitty)
X-FACTOR #203

I kind of want to try getting into Thunderbolts, but it seems like it'd be better to wait for Siege to be over. I still have plenty to read, so, as Owlman would say, it doesn't matter.

A Look at Batman: Under the Red Hood

It feels like Crisis on Two Earths just came out, but a few images from the next DC Animated movie, Batman: Under the Red Hood, have already surfaced. That's not to say that I'm complaining, because I am pretty psyched about this one.

I am not the biggest fan of Jason Todd, but I've been enjoying him a lot more in Batman and Robin, and I'm confident I'll enjoy him here too. DC Animated stuff is pretty much always fantastic and the voice cast looks really good. Jensen Ackles should do a great job with Jason Todd, and I am so excited to hear Neil Patrick Harris voicing Nightwing. I'm always going to wish that Kevin Conroy was voicing Batman, but Bruce Greenwood is a solid choice, and a definite step up from William Baldwin.

This one comes out July 27th, and apparently a pretty nice looking Red Hood figure will come out with it.

And in case you missed it on the cover, there'll be a Jonah Hex short too. I can't wait.

"Trouble in Lumpy Space" Now Available on iTunes

adventure time

One of the two Adventure Time episodes that will be airing on April 5th is now available for free on iTunes. I'm not sure why exactly they decided to release this now, but it's definitely legit- it's mentioned on the Frederator Studios blog.

I didn't enjoy this one quite as much as I did last week's sneak peek, Evicted, but it's still a terrific episode. Here's one scene you can check out while you wait for your episode to download:

This episode will air along with a Princess Bubblegum heavy episode called "Slumber Party Panic" on April 5th. I can't wait!
